Beta-glucans are a specific type of fibre found in yeast cell walls. What makes them interesting is how the body recognises them: immune cells in the gut have receptors that bind specifically to the structure of beta-glucans.

What are beta-glucans?

Beta-glucans are natural polysaccharides found in the cell walls of yeast, mushrooms, oats and barley. Their structure and function vary depending on the source. Yeast beta-glucans (1,3/1,6) differ from oat beta-glucans (1,3/1,4) both in their structure and in how the body interacts with them. Yeast beta-glucans are recognised by immune cells.

When does it make sense to take beta-glucans?

Athletes most often start taking them ahead of winter or during periods of higher training volume. Their effects are most pronounced with consistent, long-term use.

How long do beta-glucans take to work?

Beta-glucans do not have an immediate effect. Studies most commonly recommend taking them daily for at least 4–12 weeks.

Can I take beta-glucans all year round?

Yes. Long-term use is considered safe and well tolerated. Some athletes take them year-round, while others use them in cycles according to the season and their training schedule.

Can I combine beta-glucans with other supplements?
