More than 99% of the calcium in your body is found in your bones and teeth, where it is needed to keep them healthy. The rest plays an essential role in normal muscle function. Calcium is involved in every muscle contraction - every rep, sprint and step.

Low calcium intake is far from uncommon. Monitoring by the Czech National Institute of Public Health shows that people in Czechia consistently consume less calcium than recommended. Athletes with demanding training schedules have even greater calcium needs, as do adolescents and postmenopausal women. People who eat few or no dairy products may also struggle to get enough.

Why is calcium important for athletes?

Athletes who train intensively lose calcium through sweat and experience increased bone turnover - the ongoing process of breaking down and rebuilding bone.

When calcium intake is insufficient, the body starts drawing calcium from the bones, which can reduce bone density over time. This is particularly relevant for endurance athletes, female athletes with irregular menstrual cycles, and athletes competing in lighter weight categories.

How much calcium do I need each day?

The recommended daily calcium intake is 800–1,000 mg for adults and up to 1,200 mg for adolescents and postmenopausal women. Most of this should come from food.

One serving of Complex Calcium (125–250 mg) helps top up your dietary intake.

When is the best time to take calcium?

Take it in the morning or at lunchtime with a meal containing some fat. Avoid taking it at the same time as coffee, black tea, spinach or wholegrain foods, as these contain compounds - caffeine, oxalates or phytates - that reduce calcium absorption. A gap of 1–2 hours is enough.

Can I combine calcium with other supplements?

Yes. Vitamin D is an ideal partner, as it contributes to normal calcium absorption. You can also take calcium alongside magnesium, creatine, protein or caffeine. For iron and zinc, we recommend leaving a gap of at least 2 hours, as calcium reduces their absorption.

Is calcium safe to take long term?

Yes, when taken at the recommended dose. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set the tolerable upper intake level for adults at 2,500 mg of calcium per day from all sources, including food and supplements.
