How does caffeine work?

Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in the brain. Adenosine is a substance that builds up throughout the day and signals tiredness. By temporarily delaying the feeling of fatigue, caffeine helps you stay more alert, focus better and sustain effort for longer.

When is the best time to take caffeine?

Around 30–60 minutes before exercise. Blood caffeine levels peak 45–60 minutes after consumption, and the effects last 3–5 hours, depending on how quickly your body metabolises it.

How much caffeine is best for sports performance?

For a boost in alertness and focus, 100 mg is usually enough. For endurance performance, the most commonly studied dose is 3 mg per kilogram of body weight - equivalent to 210 mg for a 70 kg athlete. Higher doses do not provide greater benefits and increase the risk of nervousness and heart palpitations.

Which athletes can benefit from caffeine?

Caffeine has demonstrated benefits across a wide range of sports:

  • Endurance sports, including running, cycling, rowing and triathlon
  • Team sports, including football, ice hockey, floorball and basketball
  • Strength and high-intensity training
  • Combat sports that require quick reactions and focus
Can I combine caffeine with other supplements?

Yes. Caffeine is commonly combined with nitrates, creatine and electrolyte drinks - supplements that also support sports performance.
